Despite its breathtaking landscapes, Warwan Valley remains an offbeat destination in Kashmir, attracting only a few hundred to a couple of thousand trekkers annually.

Important Trekking Notes During The Warwan Valley Trek:

Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for navigation and cultural insights. The cost typically ranges between ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 per day. Formal permits may not be required.

The trek is difficult, requiring a high level of fitness to complete.

Starting Point: Shangus, which is 74 km from Srinagar (around a 2-hour drive). You can reach Shangus via shared cabs or private taxis.

Best Time to Visit: May to September is ideal for trekking in Warwan Valley.

2. Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is located 127 km from Srinagar in the Bandipora district. You can reach this beautiful valley in the following ways:

  • Direct Travel: Take a private cab, rental car, or bus directly to Gurez Valley from Srinagar. (The area called Mandi serves as a transport hub where buses and cabs are available for various destinations.)
  • Via Bandipora: Take a bus (₹100), train, or shared cab from Srinagar to Bandipora. From Bandipora, hire a local cab (₹350) or a private car to reach Gurez Valley via Razdan Pass.
  • Bike Trip: Rent a bike from Srinagar for an adventurous journey to Gurez Valley, an ideal option for solo travelers.

Gurez Valley is renowned for its pyramid-shaped mountain, Habba Khatoon, a mesmerizing sight that captivates every traveler. You can witness a breathtaking sunset by the Kishanganga River and soak in the serenity of nature with your partner, friends, or family.

Thajiwas Glacier Trek is just 3 km from Sonmarg, which is located 79 km from Srinagar. If you want to trek to Thajiwas Glacier, you must first reach Sonmarg. The trek distance from the main road in Sonmarg is about 3 km.

You can reach Thajiwas Glacier in two ways:

  1. Take a bus from Srinagar to Ganderbal, then another bus to Kangan. From there, hire a car or taxi to Sonmarg and start your trek from the main road.
  2. Hire a private cab or rent a car from Srinagar directly to Sonmarg, then start your trek to the glacier, which is just 3 km away.

Best Time to Visit: May to September is recommended, as temperatures range from 5°C to 20°C. Its frozen hills and idyllic environment will leave you amazed. The best part? You don’t need any special permit to visit this place.

5. Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley is located in Pahalgam town of Anantnag district, about 95 km from Srinagar. Named after the Bollywood movie Betaab, this valley is famous for its lush greenery, crystal-clear streams, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

You Can Reach Betaab Valley In Two Ways:

  1. Rent a private car from Srinagar directly to Betaab Valley or take a shared taxi to Pahalgam.
  2. Take a bus from Srinagar to Anantnag or Pahalgam, then hire a local cab to the valley. (Betaab Valley is just 15 km from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district.) You can even trek from Pahalgam to Betaab Valley.

Betaab Valley is well known for its stunning landscape and serves as a trekking base for the Tulian Lake trek. It also offers activities like horse riding, fishing, and camping, making it a perfect spot for travelers who wish to explore the nearby region or embark on the Amarnath Yatra.

Where to Stay: It’s best to stay in Pahalgam.
Entry Fee: ₹100 per person for Betaab Valley.

6. Chandanwari

Chandanwari

Chandanwari is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra and is located in Pahalgam town, about a 7 to 10 km trek from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district. If you’re planning to visit, it’s best to avoid the Amarnath Yatra season, as the routes remain closed during that time. However, if you happen to be there when the routes are closed, you can trek 14 km to Sheshnag Lake, a beautiful alternative.

You Can Reach Chandanwari In Two Ways:

  1. Hire a private taxi or car directly from Srinagar to Chandanwari.
  2. Take a shared taxi or bus from Srinagar to Pahalgam, then hire a local taxi to Chandanwari. It takes about 30 minutes to reach, as it’s just 16 km from Pahalgam.

Chandanwari is well known for hiking, trekking, and, most importantly, as the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra. Since there are no accommodation options in Chandanwari, it’s best to stay in Pahalgam.

7. Verinag

How To Reach Verinag

There are multiple ways to reach Verinag:

  1. By Train: Take a train from Baramulla to Banihal and get off at Hillar Shahabad, the nearest railway station, just 5 km from Verinag.
  2. By Road: First, reach Anantnag, which is 28 km from Verinag. From there, you can take a shared cab, private cab, or bus to Verinag.

This spot does not have any specific historical significance; it’s a natural viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains and lush green valleys.

Once you reach Srinagar, Sinthan Top is about 129 km away, which takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes by road. If you want to experience fresh snow in June or July, Sinthan Top is the perfect destination.

You can reach Sinthan Top in two ways:

  1. You can hire a private car and take the route from Srinagar → Anantnag → Kokernag → Daksum → Sinthan Top.
  2. If you are in Anantnag, you can start your trek from the base point at Arshan Valley.

9. Aharbal Falls

How to Reach Aharbal Waterfall

You can reach Aharbal Waterfall in two ways:

Private Taxi: Hire a private taxi from Srinagar to Aharbal Waterfall.

Public Transport:
Take a shared cab, bus, or train to Anantnag (44 km away). From Anantnag, take a local taxi to Aharbal Waterfall.

Take a shared cab or taxi to Parimpora or Batmaloo from Srinagar. From there, take a cab towards Shopian. Once you reach Shopian, take a shared cab to Aharbal Waterfall.

Why Visit Aharbal Waterfall

Known as the Niagara Falls of Kashmir, Aharbal is a peaceful hill station in the southwest part of Kashmir. It’s ideal for expeditions, fishing, trekking, and photography. Drung Waterfall, one of the hidden gems, is also known as a frozen waterfall in Tangmarg. This place is just 41 km from Srinagar and 16 km from Gulmarg. While traveling to Gulmarg, you can visit this place before proceeding to Gulmarg.

The best seasons to visit are February and early March. If you want to see the waterfall frozen, visit between November and March.

How to Reach Drung Waterfall

You can reach here in 2 ways:

  1. Take a private cab directly to Tangmarg from Srinagar. The waterfall is just 3 km from Tangmarg’s main market—you can trek or book an ATV or cab.
  2. Take a bus or shared taxi to Tangmarg from Srinagar. From Tangmarg’s main market, the waterfall is just 3 km away—then trek or book an ATV or cab.

Winter Travel Tips

During winter, Drung Waterfall can only be accessed by:
ATV: ₹2,500 for 3 km (you’ll sit at the back).
Chain Taxi: ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 for 6 km (available in Tangmarg).
This place is perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Note: This waterfall is no longer a natural waterfall and only freezes during the peak winter season.

13. Bangus valley

Bangus Valley is 129 km from Srinagar railway station. If you want to see something out of this world—larger-than-life meadows and natural trails like nowhere else—then you must visit Bangus Valley.

How to Reach Bangus Valley

You can take two routes to reach Bangus Valley:

Mawar and Rajwar – Two sides of Handwara.
Kupwara – A slightly longer but scenic route.

You can reach here in 3 ways:

  • Private Cab: Hire a private cab or car from Srinagar directly to Bangus Valley (shared taxis and rental cabs are not available).
  • Bus + Cab: Take a bus or train to Baramulla railway station (45 km from Kupwara). From Baramulla, take a bus or cab to Kupwara. (On the way, you can also enjoy the beauty of Kupwara Valley.) From Kupwara, take a local shared cab to Bangus Valley.
  • Handwara Route: The Handwara route is shorter than the Kupwara route. A day trip can be completed without any permits, but for overnight stays, you’ll need permission from local authorities.

Accommodation options

Teepees – The closest stay option.
Camping and Guest Houses – Other options are available nearby.
Overnight Stay: Staying in Bangus Valley requires administrative permission, but you don’t need any permits for a day trip.

You can enjoy camping, sightseeing, trekking, and fishing (you’ll need permits for these activities from the tourism office or local authorities).

14. Shankaracharya Temple

Shankaracharya Temple is also known as Jetshwar Mahadev Temple. This temple is situated on the top of the Shankaracharya Hills on the Zabarwan Range in Srinagar.

You can reach here easily. This Mahadev Temple is just 18 km from the Srinagar railway station. You can take a shared taxi, bus, or rickshaw to reach Shankaracharya Temple.

The temple is at a height of 1,000 ft above the valley floor, and the city looks beautiful from the top. It is believed that Adi Shankara visited the temple in the 8th century.

15. Dal Lake/Char Chinar Dal Lake

Dal Lake does not need any introduction. It is world-famous for its Shikara rides and floating houseboat resorts. The cost of staying in a gorgeous houseboat starts from Rs. 900 per person. Prices may vary according to the season and the amenities offered by the houseboats.

This beautiful lake is just 10 km from Srinagar. You can enjoy a Shikara ride on Dal Lake for Rs. 300–800 per person.

Char Chinar, an island in Dal Lake, is situated 31 km from Srinagar, and you can reach this place using local transportation in Srinagar.

16. Manasbal Lake

You can easily reach Manasbal Lake as regular bus services are available. You can also take a taxi or a car from Srinagar.

17. Zojila pass

Zojila Pass is a high mountain pass located in the Union Territory of Ladakh. This pass is just 23 km from Sonmarg and 102 km from Srinagar, offering breathtaking views of the mountains.

The road to Zojila Pass is risky and considered one of the most dangerous roadways in India. Travel at your own risk — it’s best to take a private car or a rented bike or bicycle.

The routes are closed at certain points for safety reasons and remain closed from November to May due to heavy snowfall. Zojila Pass serves as an alternate route for the Amarnath Yatra.

18. Sheshnag Lake

  1. This is a 1–2 day trek starting from Chandanwari, which is approximately 28 km from Zostel Pahalgam.
  2. To reach the starting point, take a cab to Pahalgam and then another cab to Chandanwari (which costs around 100–150 INR).
  3. The trek up to Pissu Top is steep, but it becomes easier beyond that. (Bonus: You can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the entire Lidder Valley from here.)
  4. The journey features magical views of waterfalls and streams along the way.
  5. Camping is available only during summer; in winter, the lake remains completely frozen.

19. Aru Valley

Aru Valley is located just 16 km from Pahalgam town and 100 km from Srinagar. It is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, golden mountain views, natural landscapes, and lush meadows.
